Marine Aquarium is a good program that needs some serious help in the graphics department. The program has some great features and some good selection when it comes to fish. But the scenery is terribly pixelated and the fish are only a little better. We felt like we were playing a video game from 1995.
The program also feels restrictive because it only allows seven fish onscreen at once, and the background selection is dismal. But Marine Aquarium is still very well priced, helping it stay as high as it does in the rankings
Anyone will feel comfortable installing and setting up Marine Aquarium; the program practically installs itself. You can launch this aquarium from your desktop and simply access the control panel by clicking the icon or by pressing F1 while the screensaver is running. The control panel is where you can make adjustments and customize your fish tank.
Marine Aquarium includes 26 species of salt-water fish, all of which move naturally and have sporadic swim patterns. The fish appear to be 3-D. The program does have some good updates that make the screensaver even more useful. Things like an integrated clock and calendar are a great touch.
We didn't have any difficulties installing Marine Aquarium.
The actual software has a limited help section, but there is a link to the developer's homepage where you can search FAQs, visit a customer forum or contact customer service by email.
The website also has real pictures of the fish you can compare to their digital counterparts.
Marine Aquarium goes above and beyond great looking fish to include fascinating statistics on each species. These fact sheets provide the name of the species, its Latin name, where it's located in the world, its diet and how big it gets as an adult. Kids and adults alike can enjoy learning about their favorite fish and recognize them swimming across their computer monitor.
Marine Aquarium has real problems in this category. The scenery has vibrant colors, but looks totally unrealistic because it is so pixelated. The plants and coral are also inactive, taking away from the realistic feel.
Marine Aquarium is a good product that needs an update for the scenery graphics. It's adequate for an aquarium screensaver, but it is definitely not awe-inspiring visually.
